RE: 1st gen gsx's capability..? newbi here...
hello and welcome to MF. I will start off by saying that the GSX is a great platform for a race car. They mod very easily and relatively cheap since there is an abundance of them. depending on how fast your looking for its pretty simple to get there. If you start wanting more than low 12's to high 11's its gets alittle expensive, but 12's are easy to obtain.
For handling they arnt the nicest youll find, i mean they are over 12 years old now. Obviously its not gonna be like the evo because those are among the best handling cars in the world. But it is AWD so its still decent.
The best way to tell between the two types of 4g63 (6 bolt, 7 bolt) you can go to www.vfaq.com and under the engine section there is alittle faq on it. It has to do with the oil pan. However when you say EVO3 to me that doesnt mean engine. Im wondering if you mean evo3 16g which would be a turbo upgrade very common with the eclipse's.
The one downfall of the 1g's is that the tranny's are often not strong enough for the high HP cars also dont take well to a beating. What will happen is the syncros will go on you. And ive even seen cases where the tranny just cracked. But once again there are easy ways around that.
Things to look for with an old car like this is that the motor is running strong (of course) and check for rust in the engine bay and the frame mostly. Also on a gsx its a good idea to look around the transfer case to make sure it hasnt been leaking, because alot of people wont keep up on that maintenance and will just let it leak. Then youll have a junk t-case.

one thing to look for to tell if it has been abused could be the valve cover, if it is leaking quite a bit of oil around the gasket, it could be because it has been abused... or so i have heard

Thats something i said : )
However, if the car has been rebuilt or has had the internals changed, that is not accurate... because its basically a new engine anyways. But yes generally thats a good way to tell.
