Default 1st Gen Help Needed!!

Hey guys
I am new to mitsubishi's and need some help. I bought this car for 200 dollars and it had been sitting for about a year without being ran. I took it out for a spin and at first it would idle low and rough but than i put a new air filter on it and it helped out a little bit. I also bought a fuel filter and plugs but havent had time to put them in yet. After it ran for a while and got warm i mean really warm it idled just fine on its own without me giving it gas so i think what that was was just the MAS getting used to the clean air. Also i noticed the engine light came on so i popped the hood and noticed some smoke coming up from somewhere and i looked around and heard a hissing sound and notice that there was a little bit of a leak coming out of my thermostat housing where it meets with the gasket. So i went to the local parts store and purchased a new Stat and gasket for it and put it of and now i can not get it to go on right becuz they gave me a rubber ring that i can not get to fit not only around the stat but also into the hole to form a seal. So thankfully i work at a shop and we have some stat gaskets like the paper ones untouched just laying around so i put one of those on and than it still leaked but i didnt put any gasket sealer on so i took it off cleaned it up again and put it back on with some sealant. while tightening it down i noticed the housing cracked so now i need to get a new housing, have one coming for 15 bucks, but i need to know what could cause the the light to come on. I dont think that the stat would really cause that so i guess what can you guys think of from past experiences might the light be turning on from. I really need some help because this is my daily driver since i am turning my honda into a Drag Car for next summer. Here is everything i know, 4G63 Non-turbo, 1994 Eclipse Gs 2WD. Real quick, do you think that the rough idle and slow start up be caused by either the fuel filter being clogged or the fuel pump going out. I am starting with a fuel filter just to get started with the simple and cheap stuff. Anyways thank you for your help and hope you can help me figure it out.

Hey i also need some help with exhaust stuff. Since the 95-99 gs and 89-94 gs have the same motor would it be safe to assume you can use the same exhaust such as header and catback exhaust system or do they totally fit differently. I understand that they are probably different total lengths but i would imagine they have the same curves and bends in the pipes and would just be a few inches further back under the rear bumper. If i am totall wrong please let me know but if i am correct please let me know so i can get started on this exhaust conversion. Thank you

Also you can ONLY get an exhaust for the 1g. Because exhuast exits on the opposite side of the car. So the bends are totally different.

The rough idle can be from a number of things. You are saying it only does it at cold start, or is it all the time. And what are the rpms at during the cold start

that and the 95-99 gs have the 420a motor not a 4g63 non turbo

Check the o2 sensor. It causes all kinds of goofy things to happen when bad.

Hey well thanks guys, i dont know why the light came on but i disconnected the battery for a few minutes and then hooked it all back up and reset the ECU and the light shut off so i dont know why it was on but i do have another question for you. I have noticed in my research that although the motors are completely different in the 2nd gen compared to the first gens you can use the same turbo manifolds and they will bolt right up. Now my question is will that work the same for a Non-turbo Header because i am finding cheaper Headers for the 2nd gen than i am for the 1st gen. So if you think that would work than let me know so i can get this asap. also is the only difference in the catback exhaust system for a gsx and a gs the flange from the cat to the exhaust pipe, because if that is the case than that can be bypassed with getting a turbo cat and non turbo header so the cat bolts to the downpipe and also to the exhaust pipe. Anyways there are my questions, Thank you for your time and help in advance.
