93 2.0 GS 5-Speed - Clutch
 

The clutch has been in our 93 for about 20k miles now. Even before the new clutch kit, the clutch doesn't always disengage going into first and reverse especially.

This seems to me to be more likely the clutch hydraulic master and slave cylinders rather than the clutch.[:-]

Do you agree?

Is there air is the sysyem, try bleeding it.

To clarify, the clutch engages right off the floor and it drags between gears or initially going into 1st at a light unless you double clutch it and press the pedal to the floor hard. Seems to me the pressure plate isn't getting enough push from the slave hydraulics.

Try adjusting the clutch master cylinder and also check the clutch pedal, it might be worn out. Push down on the pedal and release it then try to pull up on the pedal. If it moves the pedal assembly is worn.

So you don't think the slave or the master cylinders are worn out! I would never have thought about the pedal assembly being worn. Thanks for your thoughts and ideas! I have ordered a repair manual.

Well if they are not leaking I wouldn't replace them.

I would start with the clutch pedal adjustment. There is a small bolt on the push rod behind the pedal toward the master cylinder. You have to loosen the bolt, then turn the rod so that it extends the length of play, then retighten the bolt.

Well I finaly got my Chilton Manual and started reading the section 7-36 Pedal Height/Free-Play Adjustment instructions. It says that the height of the pedal pad face should be 6.93-7.17 in to the firewall. Hummm

There is no sketch or pic to show how to make that measurement.

Where on the firewall (do they really mean the floor) does one take that measurement from?

Our pedal definitely has way to much Free-Play so I think you guys are onto the problem. I will adjust the pedal free play as instructed in the Chilton. I will also bleed the system. I see no leaks so maybe new clutch cylinders are not needed afterall.
