If the body and interior is clean, I would just get a long block 1.8 engine and keep it. It'll be a good learning experience.

Nick, call around the salvage yards. By far your cheapest route is to find a good salvage 1.8 engine. You should be able to get one for $300ish. You said your car broke down every 100 miles or so. Was it allways engine problems? I dont really like DSM's myself, but for the money, they are hard to beat. And I do think a lot of the engine damage had to have happend when it was run at redline. Why in the heck would he have done that!!!!! Unless it was just pure meanness! I am noASAE certified mechanic, but I am the parts dept. mgr. at a AGCO / Massey Ferguson dealership. And I have never in all my years messin with cars, trucks, semi's, or farm equipment seen a bottom end go out like that! By the way, some dude in here bought a complete 1990 DSM WITH 2.0 Turbo for something like $200. They are out there to be had. You just have to look really hard to find them. But they are out there. Best of luck to ya. [sm=burnout.gif]

hey, he did it because we were in a very tight financial spot and he was going to pawn the title, and they needed the car there.. we will get the title back soon.. and he is being an *** and still insists on rebuilding this ****ed up engine.. ill let him do the work, if it blows again, it is more of his money down the drain. yea, it was breaking down alot, the only ones that werent engine related was the clutch and rear main seal.. well thats kinda in between engine and tranny lol
