im not sure if its the same thing, but if its the balance shaft inside your engine, you probably have some quite worse problems.

same thing, if the balance shaft is broken, it most likely took the timing belt with it, which most likely did some engine damage, bent valves etc. thats the reason people take them out, its a dangerous belt and it frees up 15 or so

so u can run a car without a harmonic balancer?? ive never heard of that but it could be true. its the same thing as a crank pulley. so u think it did valve damage and caused the head to get out of timing??

would i have to replace the engine??

you shouldnt have to replace the engine as far as the bottom end goes. But you would definetly have some head work that needs to be done. And if it did bend some valves your looking at around 1k-2k for that work

Its called a silent shaft and here is a description of what it does from the tech manuals enjoy
"The silent shaft system counteracts the secondary exciting moment in the engine's vertical direction as well as the rolling moment, thereby drastically reducing the vibration and noise generated by the engine."
This system is also used in the 4G63 SOHC engine as well.
