The harmonic balancer made up of 2 pulleys held together with rubber bushing. Over time, the bushing can seperate cauisng the harmonic balancer to split. If this is your problem- the repair is as easy as replacing the harmonic balancer with a new one. You won't be able to run very far without the harmonic balancer as it is responsible for driving your accessories. You won't make it very far without your alternator and you'll fry your engine without your water pump - both of which are driven off of the harnonic balancer.

RE: harmonic balancer
I thought it was the crankshaft pully the drove the the other pullys like the water pump and alternator. The Harmonic balancer is behind the pully on the crank shaft on most engines. Its job is to reduce the vibration of the crankshaft thereby reducing wear on the main bearings. I have seen harmonic balancers on V-8s mostly. Now the balance shaft does the same thing as the balancer just that is it internal to the engine and not outside of it on the crankshaft. I think we are getting these two items confused.
