Default New, Why do people say stay away from DSM and Mitsu?

I havn't put money down on it yet but I'm just now looking my first Eclipse, it's a 93' GS(i think it is) Base model with a SOHC engine in it. when the guy started it, it smoked a little bit, then quited down, untill i drove it. It seemed fine other than a little more smoke... Blue Oil Smoke. Said it hasn't been started in a few weeks and says it burns/leaks a little oil. also he said that he blocked off the PCV due to oil getting into the intake. the body is decent but on the pass. side is beaten up a bit. interior is fine and is 5speed. $500 is it worth it? are DSMs Reliable? All of my friends(so far) have said that DSMs, and Mitsus were UnReliable and sucked. Is there any truth to that? Ive always liked the Eclipses and Evo's. BTW the car also has 250,xxx miles on it, but most are highway. Im looking for somthing reliable now, but would like to eventualy do somthing cool with it. Also how avalible are 4G63s and how hard is the swap?
Thanks,
Tim

its smokes and it smokes when u drive it its a bad sign the 500 is cool but if u think of how much a new engine will cost then the labor to install it if u dunnu how to do it yourself then the tunning if i were u id buy a newer eclipse even a 95 i just like the body style personally but what i've heard and what i've seen is 2 diffrent things yea the engines suck but what engine dosent eventually suck when u keep ur foot to the floor without putting any mods on the ride and if u dont know how to tune it your double screwed from the start ssoooooooo go to autotrader.com check it out and just get a price range i spent 3g's on my 98 eclipse gs and it was worth it. that to me was a great deal i dunnu about it to others with the sell it and get a gsx or a gst only reason why thats said is because improper tunning and lack of knowledge when installing/buying but anyways thats my input im out see ya

The problem happened when fast and the furious came out... To many people thought there car could do what they saw in the movie... And the Eclipses got beat to ****... But there are good ones out there.. Just gotta keep looking!

DSMs are getting old and you cant expect all of them to be in tip top shape anymore. Especially a car with 250k miles, if it is running good then that is surprising. Asa for people saying to stay away from mitsus/dsms, they are people who dont know what they are talking about. Sure they have some problems but lots of cars do. If you havnt bought a car yet hold out in trying to find something that runs good, has lower mileage, and you will be happy with without swapping. People love to say that theyre going to do a swap but rarely do, its just a big dream that costs way too much time and money to be worthwhile.

I had an Acura 3.2 CL Type S.. And I traded it in for my 98 GST Spyder.. I love them that much... But do try to stay away from dsm's that have been owned by younger kids that dont know how to treat a car.. You can only beat on a car so much before it starts breaking down all over.. No matter if its a dsm or a freakin luxury vehicle... There good daily drivers.. Not daily beatings...

You want something reliable... but you are looking to do a 4g63 swap. Thats like saying I dont want to die but I am thinking of driving a streetbike... in the rain... at night... naked!!!
