Hey, I am thinking about buying a 1995 eclipse GSX but it has aboutn 140,000 miles? I can get it for 3000 but am wondering if i am walking into a money pit. What would you check for other than crankwalk and how can you tell if it has it? Thanks alot

well if it has crankwalk then it obviously wont run right cause it'll be blown lol... and for 3k with a 140,000 i'm assuming you'll be walkin into a money pit... but check the timing belt, any rust?, and normal maintenance issues

Depends on how much maintenance has been done on it. Most likely you will need to do an engine rebuild on it soon. But it could be fine. If you can do a compression test that will give you an idea on how the bottom end is. If you don't have an option to spend money fixing it then it probably isn't a good idea because issues could come up fast. Because if you don't have money to fix it then you will be screwed if something happens.
As far as crankwalk, it usually happens before 130,000 but not always here is some data and statistics about crankwalk. It's very interesting, read it.

Thanks guys....Here's the deal. I want a turbo AWD and a sixbolt swap is deffinetly feasible if the current engine goes south. Do they have any other common problems? Sorry for the newb questions just covering the bases as I have never worked or had a mitsubishi. Thanks!

Well depending on how well the car was maintained you could have very few problems or quite a few. Other than crankwalk I don't think there are necessarily any common problems, Make sure you change the timing belt on time, it is touchy!

These are so easy to get parts from and work on. As long as you like wrenching you will be fine : )
The stock 7 bolt with that many miles might be okay. It really depends how the maintaance has been done, and how the car has been driven. One major way to tell is if it has any oil around the valve cover. Some is normal.. but a f-load is just abuse. If you are cool with doing a 6 bolt swap then i wouldnt worry anyway, that will take care of any reliability issues.
Yes, these cars are money pits. Why do people buy them? Because they love them, and when they are modded enough, they are strong as hell. You soon will be adicted, mark my words.

The addiction part is no joke. I really wanted an RSX type S and my GF talked me into getting the GSX and after I got it I got OBSESSED. She wishes she would have never told me to get it sooo bad. It's like all you can think about is how cool the next mod will be, and then when you think you are done you will see something else even cooler! Everyones gotta have hobbies tho right?
