Well, it's actually 95-99 which are 2g, or second generation. 89-94 are 1g or, you guessed it, first generation. It's kinda confusing, but here's a quick breakdown. The 2g cars came in turbo and non-turbo. The turbo cars had a mitsubishi made 2.0l turbocharged engine, the venerable 4g63. The non-turbo's came with a chrysler made 2.0 Naturally Aspirated engine, the 420A. The 4g63 is almost the same engine used in the new Evolution, and is a provenengine. The 420A is the same used in the Dodge Avenger, Neon, Sebring, andthe other cloud cars. Both engines are DOHC 2.0l 4 cylinders, however not a single part is interchangeable between them. Everything is different right down to the motor mounts and crossmember.

Of course the turbo engines are stronger and have more potential than the non-turbo engines, but the chrysler 420A can also be a powerhouse on it's own. The 420a is now currently being used in the Neon SRT-4, so it's got some potential and Mopar is also backing it up. The transmissions are totally different between the two engines, so they probably won't share axles or anything like that.

The turbo engines are found in the front wheel drive GST and all wheel drive GSX models. The RS and GS models have the chrysler engines. The only thing the cars have in common are body related components, such as suspension and the exhaust system. The AWD GSX has different suspension than the FWD models, harder springs and stronger shocks in the rear due to the increased weight. The GSX also has a strongerundercarriage and numerous chassis reinforcements. It's not easy to convert a FWD GST to AWD....unless....

Unless you have a Spyder. The Spyders are the convertible models and come in GS and GST flavor. Both models were built on the AWD chassis for extra strengthening due to the lack of a roof. The Spyder GST is like a hardtop GST, except it's convertible. It has the same engine/tranny as the hardtop, but just on the AWD chassis. Now the Spyder GS....The underdog. It seems like an underdog, but may be the best eclipse out of the whole line up. First, it doesn't come with a 420A engine like the other non-turbos. Instead it comes with a 4g64, a relative of the 4g63. However unlike the 4g63, the 4g64 has 2.4l(2351cc) and is SOHC. Now, the 4g64 is so closely related to the 4g63 that almost everything that can fit on a 4g63 will fit on a 4g64, save for pistons. The DOHC 4g63 head bolts right on, the turbo manifolds bolt right up and every aftermarket part can be fitted onto the engine. This means the Spyder GS has the most potential and upgradability of all the cars. An AWD 2.4l turbocharged Convertible

Wow thanks a lot, that answers a lot of questions. What kind of powerpotential do these engines posses? (like a stock5.0L is good to about 400rwhp FIbefore the block splits) I know a kid with a 1g eclipse and a turbo upgrade running 12.8 and 114mph in the 1/4, how fast do the 2g's get streetably? Thanks

If your into bracket racing, you can get a 2g turbointo the 13's fairly easily. The AWD's can even pull amazing 1.7sec 0-60 sprints with very little cash. A few mods for cheap(definitely under $500 using brand name aftemarket parts), and you can get close to the 300hp mark. As for HP, The stock turbo on a 2g only flows about 250hp. So replacing the turbo is definitely a good idea if you want more power. As for the bottom end, i've seen cars run with a stock bottom end up to 450hp. The only mods they had were a1g head, bigger turbo, fuel management and upgrades, and exhuast upgrades. 450hp crank roughly translate to 380-400whp because drivetrain loss is only like 13-15% due to FWD. A lot of engine parts between the 1g and 2g turbo cars are interchangeable, but generally the 1g has better parts. It has a better head, better intake manifold, thicker con-rods, stronger 6-bolt block, and a bigger stock turbo. You can possibly make a streetable12 second 2g with a stock bottom end, however reliabililty becomes a concern. I'm not sure what goes first o the 2g's, but i think it may be the con-rods. The 1g big rods have been proven to last up to 550hp, and they're a simple upgrade. The only problem DSMer's have with the cars is the drivetrain. The clutch's and transmissions are strong.....but to an extent. However, there are shops that build bulletproof trannies that can handle most anything you throw at them.
