If you both have the same engine and are both reving at the same RPM's in 3rd gear- there must be a gear ratio difference in your transmissions. You're lower speeds indicate closer ratio's which might give you the edge in accelleration.

let me guess yours is stick and his is auto? The auto tranny is slower then the 5spd, like said above the gear ratios are different, along with the redlines and shift points. The 95 is a little different than the other years. It has a different ecu program than any of the other years, it uses a system similar to the 4g63's. The ecu does not apply fuel cut, They are missing a cam positing sensor(if i rember correctly). Also it features a return line fuel system and the crank and bearings are different. And for some reason the 95 mtx ecu cook themselves. besids that its the same.

Also you shouldent shift at the red on a stock 420a, the car dosent make enough power at that high of a r. I know its stupid try racing him again and shift 1st gear at 6, 2nd at 62 and third at 66. I bet you will pull on him a bit more.
