Default AC Removal

I'm about to start the painful process of removing and rebuilding the engine on my '97 GST. I've been doing a lot of reading to prep myself for the pull and I've got a question about disconnecting and removing the AC. I've read that it is a good idea to have a shop discharge the freon from the AC and I've also read that there is a way to remove the unit without discharging it.

Do I absolutely have to have the freon discharged to remove the unit safely? Or can I remove it without having it discharged? I hear it isn't cheap to have it recharged so I would like to keep it charged if I can.

your best bet is to remove the compressor from the engine and let it sit connected to the lines in the engine bay. Otherwise your stuck needing to have it recharged.

And there won't be any harm done to the compressor or the lines by doing that?

well they are rubber off the compressor and then connect to the hardlines, so it should be fine
