Default cat converters

Ok, computer is saying the Catalytic converter is not working up to specks. Sounds like I need to replace it (185,000 miles ain't all that bad). I see converters on e-bay that replace the stock unit but apparently are a bit larger in diameter for a better flow. Cost is so low, I have concerns on if these will cause me to have additional computer errors. This is an actual converter and not one of the test tube units.

So better to spend for a stock one or go with one of the aftermarket ones?

wouldn't a high flow cat be better? Magna flow makes them. Im looking for one Cali legal. If your outside of cali they sell em 49 state legal. There a whole lot cheaper then the stock ones. In fact even if you had to buy 2 or 3($150-$200) it does not add up to the price of the stock one($550). I have the same problem and im looking for one cali legal. But thats just my 2 cents.

Dude sebba who cares if the high flow doesnt add horsepower. Thats not what he wants. All he wants is a cheaper aftermarket cat that will still pass the smog testing. Does it say the magnaflow is cali legal. I would think it is. The best thing you could probably do is go to a muffler shop and see what they would charge. I think with install it shouldnt be more than $200-250. Now what tells you that the cat is bad. Do you have a CEL? and what is the code

I thought i implied this in my first post. I guess not.

I know loads of people that have bought them, and they dont pass emissions. Bad quality.

Cheap for a reason!

i dont think magnaflow is a cheap brand though. And i could see them having a product that passes. I still feel the best thing to do is just go to a shop and have it done

Good comparison on the subject. Ignore the car used, similar results should be had with most. Dynoed stock, magnaflow repacement, magnaflow high performance and straight pipe.
