Default Coil Pack

My new eclipse had burnt out 3 coil packs now. First one I burnt out, then a friend burnt out two while he had it this past week. Everytime it quits working is when the car is shifted at a higher rpm. It went out going from 3rd to 4th 2 times. The one time that it went out, there was a flame that shot out of the exhaust, and the tail lights flickered when it happened. So they thought it was a bad ground, and they grounded it in a new spot to the frame. I thought it may be the voltage regulator, and it is sending surges of power that are to much and over heating the coil pack.. Do you guys think that either of those would be the problem? Anybody have this problem before? I would hate to have to buy another coil pack..

hmm might be the tach input for the power transitor. It tells the coil to fire more at higher rpm's it might be shorted or something cause the surges.

ya, I was looking at some msd parts, but i cant see upgrading anything till I find out what is doing it for sure.. Were pretty sure its the voltage regulator on the altenator, but not 100% positive.. So untill I know whats doing it, im not spending the money on msd parts... Its already $105 for each.. so $210 each time it gets toasted.. Maybe next spring though.. Im in NY right now so Im not around my car but my buddy is workin on it.. Ill keep ya updated when we get it fixed..
