Differential Issues, 2nd gen.
Okay, 1st off I am new to this eclipse thing. Long story short my boy and I have been working on his '97 non-stop since he got back from Iraq. Since then we have completed a 20G Turbo upgrade, GReddy intercooler, BOV, porting/polish and compression on new heads, short block, pistons, new fuel system, upgraded cooling, and the full GSX (I believe) awd swap all brand new dealer parts, as well as a few other minor diddies.
My question becomes about the AWD diffs, has anyone here seen or even done a swap for the lan evo units? What we want is to replace the GSX diffs with the Evo 7 units. If what I am told is true that is just a simple 10-bolt swap. Or is this even true?

i really do not know, and it would be hard to say for most american tuners, since the Evo 7 wasnt offered here in the US...however, any information that you find as you go would be a great help to future members who may try this.
why the swap? is the evo 7's transfer case supposed to be more reliable?

RE: Differential Issues, 2nd gen.
The full reason is "Because we can...."
The official reason is that after much research the evo differentials seem to have better ratios and seem to be far more reliable in track or drift situations; lets face it the Evo's awd system is second only to ATESA. The evo 6 was made around the same time frame as the later 2nd gens, but the diffs on the 6, 7 and 8 seem to match almost flawlessly. Being that the 7 was the best evo made (aside from the 9 which I cannot find any parts or info on yet) it's only the natural choice. I would suggest the 9 but from what I have it's not built similar enough to fit properly.
After that much thought the task seems makes sense, at least to me.

eclipse will never be a good drifter though. I dont want to be mr negative but it kinda seems like a waste of time/money to me. is there anything wrong with the stock diff or are you converting a n/t to a turbo?

RE: Differential Issues, 2nd gen.
.... you apparently havn't read our mod list above. Yes its an n/a-turbo conversion, and with the current settings the car drifts like a pro. But In both our opinions an FF drift requires little skill, AWD drifting is the most impressive and technique oriented; plus it takes a fare amount of skill on the driver's part to complete an awd drift on an asphault surface. People told me that an FR Porsche putting down 240+ft/lbs on 2.43dM of rubber would never drift and I proved them all wrong. Hell my gen1 can put the moves on any corner I have yet to meet. A car doesn't need a 50/50 weoght ratio to exact a drift, the latter just gives the driver a minor handicap until he/she has found a way to overcome it.
However back on topic, the primary goal is to improve control. Not that the gsx system is bad its just that not all awd drives are created equal.
This is a simple matter of taking his car one step further.
