Default engine trouble

hey guys.. i don't know a whole lot about how engines work so im sorry if i sound like an idiot, but in one of my eclipses (1997 rs) i had a blown motor and just put a replacement in. the 'junkyard' type place i bought it from said it ran when it was pulled, and it turned over fine outside of the car. but, once we got it in there, the engine wouldnt even backfire or give a spark or anything. when we first tried starting the engine it caught for a second but then after that we didnt have any luck. any suggestions?

Could be a crank angle sensor, or perhaps an ignition control module. Very hard to tell without testing equipment.
