Is granny shifting(manually shifting an automatic) really bad for your car?

 

I think you need to learn your terms. Last I checked that wasn't granny shifting. But to answer the actual question forcing your car to shift by selecting the gear with the automatic isn't bad for your car unless you continuosly overrev the engine. Essentially you're doing nothing other than just not letting it change to the gear is SHOULD be in for best fuel economy. But there IS another way to stop the car from shifting up gears. There is a kickdown cable that acts at WOT and knocks the trans down a gear. At least for most cars there is the kickdown cable so if you mash the gas it drops down a gear which is commonly refered to as passing gear. Then when you let off the gas it will shift back up into the correct gear without damaging the transmission at all.

with that being said....have you been double clutching during the races like you should?

 

my eclipse is 4 speed automatic... lame i know, but will i get a better launch if i start in 1st, then shift to 2nd then put it in drive for 3rd and let it autoshift to 4th,

typically, granny shifting is driving a manual and being very gentle on it, like a grandma would.

 

ah my bad, well whatever you call it when you drive an automatic like a manual starting in low then 2nd then drive.

 

over drive off, over drive is an imagenary gear(5th if you will) that during crusing will drop the car into that gear the keep the r's low to conserve gas. Keep the over drive off that will she will run to the red evertime.

If you were wondering, granny shifting is what truckers do to shift without the use of the clutch on older transmissions. You run the rpms up from one gear, let off and pull the shifter out of gear and push it into the next before the rpms drop too much and you just end up grinding. It is a normal practice with our forestry water tankers at the firestation. They're ancient.
