the only thing is if you do gut the cat it will effect the emissions/smog system and you would have to replace it before you got your emissions/inspection on the car.

If you gut the cat, it'll most likely throw a CEL code from the second O2 sensor. But you can gut it, throw in a straight pipe inside the cat shell, and get a modded O2 sensor like the Supra guys do. As for the sound...well...people will most likely know you aren't running a real cat.

all the o2 sensor after your cat does is check to see if the air is cleaner than before it came through the car, to fix the check engine light just take the o2 sensor out and tie it somewhere in the freshair. as for the cat gutting, why? leave it, dont go through the trouble for the 2hp you'll get, and it will sound and smell like crap. then when (not if, when) you get sick of the sound or you get caught for running no cat (huge fine) you'll have to buy a new one anyway.

The second O2 sensor will throw a "catalyst system efficiency" CEL if it's run for a certain period with no amounts of emissions gasses detected. The sensors have both a high and low limit for the amount of recognized emissions.
