Default Help with motor choice

Hey everyone,

I am looking into getting an engine for my sons' '98 Eclipse GS. I am not available to look and see what he has for an engine. Can anyone tell me if the 420a is standard on a '98 Eclipse GS 5 spd? I am looking to buy an engine and have found a few places online but need to know for sure what it is. Thanks in advance for your help.

The GS/RS model has a 420a engine. You can put in a 4G63 from a 2nd Gen Eclipse/Talon, or a 4G63 from a 1st Gen.

The 1st Gen swap cost ALOT more.

Thanks will. A guy I talked to though said the tranny is on the opposite side on a 4G63. Is there any truth to that or is it a direct bolt in? Thanks.

nooooooooooooo no no no... you cant swap a 4g63 into a rs or a gs... well you can, but the fabrication and such is a TON of work and a ton of money... i would only put another 420a into it... that way you wont need to fabricate anything and it'll cost a lot less

now they have race motors for the RS/GS at like slowboyracing.com or anyother DSM website but its kind of pricey....but it might be worth it to you if you dont want to get rid of the RS/GS to get a GST/GSX. just dont turbo the 420a motor.

Willdue, WTF are you talking about?? You cant put a 4g63 in the place of a 420a w/o spending about $6k in mods and fabrication. You may as well install a 350 V8 in that car for that price. It would be cheaper to just BUY a 4g63t powered car! Were you drunk?

thats what i was wondering... basically man, the rs and gs have the chrysler 420a motor, you'll see this in neons and such... the gst and the gsx have the 4g63 motor, you'll see this is evo's... this is the only turbo'd version of the two, and the guy you talked to was right, the two engines are based on the opposite sides of the engine bay... if you have a gs, then you need to get a 420a,which im assuming isnt very much money... especially compared to a 4g63

Now, don't forget, if the car is a Spyder GS, then its a 4g64 2.4ltr.
but that also can't be swapped... plus its just pointless.

now explain to me the exact difference between the 4g63 and 4g64... is it a completely different motor or is it just differences in bore and internals etc.

The deal with the 4g63 in a rsis that the engine bay is four inches smaller then the gstso in order to put a 4g63 in it its really tight . But the motor mounts are in the right spotto it'll bolt in but you have to adjust them to get the clearence inbetween the radiator and firewall. Ihave an rs and have already attempted this swap and it wasn't feesable, due to lack of space.
