I was wondering how hard is it to rebuild a gs motor and put a turbo on it.. Is it really hard or kinda simple?

Are you planning on doing the work yourself? If so, it shouldn't be that hard of a job, but if you're new at it then I wouldn't recommend you do it by urself.

It would be alot easier to rebuilt a GS-T, because the motor is already turbo.

The 420a is kind of a simple motor. It's like a "basic" motor....ya know, textbook. I'd say if you're doing a full overhaul, get a shop to do it for you. If you're just replacing seals and gaskets, you can do that yourself fairly quickly. Now if the engine died because of some unknown reason, don't attempt this youself. Actually, if anything in the engine that was part of the rotating assembly is broken or shattered, get a shop to check the block, head, and anyting else you plan to re-use. But it shouldn't take more than a week for even a novice to rebuild anengine given he has all tools and hardware and a good manual at his disposal. The turbo part gets tricky because you have to build the engine around the idea that it will be boosted. Low-comp piston, hi-lift low-duration cams would be good, stronger rods maybe....simple stuff to make the engine more resistant to detonation.

It would be more fun to build and turbocharge the 420A, but if you can afford to get a GS-T I would do it. In the long run it will be alot cheaper to build the 4g63 over the 420A.

Yeah, my old talon was a 420a and i liked it a lot. Well, back then i tought it wasn't powerful enough, but now i appreciate it. The 420a's sound great too if you go the NA route. Just the motor itself, without exhaust. A shop near me had one built for a customer for his avenger. It was NA and he had a lot of mods on it including pistons and cams. He had a racepipe on the car(cops in my area don't even know what a catalytic converter looks like, plus i work at an emmisions testing facility so noticed immediately), but besides being loud it had a great hi-rev sound. If anyone here has ever heard a chevy v8 at 6k rpm, it sounds somewhat like that. They do sound great.

The 420A is not a textbook motor. In terms of strength, many argue it's stronger than the 4g63 in terms of being able to handle boost if it were built for boost (i.e., oil squirters, etc.).

Turboing a 420A is a LOT of work to get it to run great. Sure, when you turbo that 420A it's supposedly faster than a stock GST. keep in mind, I said stock. You mod the GST, you're 420A's gone. Building an all motor 420A block will cost a ton of money. First, you'll need at least a Hahn Stage 2 kit. The stage 1 doesn't come with the hella exspensive fmic. That's over 3K to order it and get it on right. Then, you gotta tear down the engine and rebuild it with a ton of exspensive parts to get more outta it. HRC owns the fastest 420A eclipse in the world, it runs 11's in the 1/4.

The 4g63 swap into a 420A 2g eclipse has been accomplished by very few people, as it's extremely hard to remount all the stuff and get it working nice and clean.

420a is not a textbook motor? Explain? It's a DOHC Aluminum head, Iron block. It has a very "common" 87.5x83 bore and stroke. 9.1compression ratio. No Valve timing, no variable intake, nothing that needs any special instructions. As for strength....any motor can bestronger than a 4g63 if it were built for boost. The 4g63 has been proven to hold 450hp boost on stock internals. It excels at what it was made for. You've probably heard the argument that the 4g63 is a 20 year old design and that the 420a is a newer more up-to-date engine. Good point, but Mitsubishi has a much better reputation making 4-bangers than Dodge does. Look at the Evolution, DSM's, and their Heavy Industries equipment(tractors and stuff stuff like that use in Japan). Dodge's best effort in the 4-cylinder arena is the SRT-4. Compare the EVO and SRT-4. They both use almost the same turbo(16g family), both have FMIC's, and both have beefed up internals. The evo2.0l produces more power and has about the same torque band than the 2.4l SRT-4 engine. Also, building a NA 420a is not very exspensive at all. For about the same price as a 16g w/ install kit, you can have a nice little 420a that will respond.

What the f**k are you smoking man? Making an n/a turbo not exspensive? Turbo stage 2 kits from HRC for the DSM are in the mid 2500 dollar range. I bought an AWD GSX for that much! To me, that's considered exspensive. A 16G with install kit, $600 including shipping and everything. I really don't see you turboing your n/a for $600.
