Ijust bought a 95 eclipse gs 5 speed. This car is hella slow so i wanna know what i can do with $1700 to make it quicker but also be smog legal because i live in california.I would like to get a turbo, but im not sure if that would be a good idea with this motor or should i swap motors and ifsoto what motor. Thanks for your suggestions.

If you double that amount, you can add a turbo kit from Star and Hahn. Otherwise, the 420a needs a lot of cash to make faster. The standard cat-back, intake, underdrive pulley, etc. can make a difference but, it will not be "fast" in the 13-14 second 1/4 mile track sense. Maybe 16 seconds though, lol.
A swap is feasible but not if you have a monetary cap like $1700.

Well if it wasnt going to be so hard to turbo it i prolly would keep it. i thought when i bought the car that they were pretty easy to turbo. Ive had turbo cars in the past and theirs nothin like em. but i think my budget is going to be around 5k. Well actually a little more,i bought the car for 2400 it was primer white, so i put a 98 front and rear bumper on it and its going to paint today. After its painted i think i can sell it for at least 3500. it has a newer motor with only 70k on it and the clutch and tranny are perfect aswell as the interior. So if i sell it for around 3-3.5k plus the 1.7k thatll put me around 5k.

 

for 5k you can get a gs-t... but you may have to drive a lil bit to get it. FINALLY somebody who takes the easy road!! lol
