Default Major Car Problems

First off, I know very little about cars, so if you have trouble with my elementary descriptions I apologize. (Just read that other car problems post) I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS. She has many problems that have heaped up on top of each other in a very short time. So here we go.....

Transmition: For example, when I accelerate to get on the highway and then start to ease off the gas once I have reached my desired speed, there is a loudthump when the car downshifts.(hope thats the right term) Also if I put it in reverse and then set it into drive, there is about a 3 second wait for the car to actually shift into drive and the loud thump happens.

Power Steering?: There is a rattle coming from under the hood, but not the engine itself. My friend told me it was the power steering because when you turn the wheel the rattle stops. I checked the power steering fluid and it was very low. So I fill it up and the noise stopped. About a week later it started again but the fluid is full. It now also makes a kind of humming noise also.

There are a few other things but that is all I will bother you with. Really I just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas about what was the problem and if they did how expensive it would be to fix. I realize it is hard to know exactly what is wrong without seeing the car itself but any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

the tranny is on it's way out.. you could try a tranny restorer to see if it helps, but it sounds like it's getting bad..

power steering pump might be on it's way out too...

feel free to ask any other questions about you other problems... these threads are here to help you out...

Before I rip the tranny out of the car, I would take it to a shop to have ALL the transmission fluid removed from it and do a tranny service. I have seen too many times someone drop a tranny pan and drain what fluid was in the pan itself and not remove the fluid in the torque converter. When the new fluid is added with the old fluid still residing in the converter, problems arise. Slipping gears and such. Now you may be able to just drop the pan and remove the fluid to do the tranny service and not have problems, but if it were me I would spend the extra dollars to have all fluid removed. And this is assuming you have an AT.

As for the power steering, I do concur with WHITE GSX about it being gone, but I can't help but think there is now air trapped in the hoses and if you can't bleed the air out, then I would have to think the pump is gone or on it's way. I believe when you put power steering fluid in the pump, you should turn the wheel in both directions several times to remove any air stuck in the hoses since you ran it low. Then top the pump off to insure you will not get air in it again a week later or so.

Hope this helps.

Hey, thanks for all the help guys. But, I just got a new Eclipse! Brand spanking new. I had a feeling the tranny was jacked. Didn't get much for the trade-in, but got more than I thought I would! Thanks again.

Well I don't like 3G Eclipses either but that could be just me...

Non-turbo V6 SOHC...SOHC on V6??? 3 spark design...I don't understand...

Mitsubishi said...since Lan Evo. VIII uses same engine as 2G GST, GSX...they didn't wanna put that engine on 3G Eclipse also...and to bring up HP on non-turbo engine they built it V6 but why SOHC then??? lolz oh wellz...

But it's just me...lolz some of my friend's like 3G Eclipses...

Cong. for your new car!!!

I really cant stand how they completly changed the eclipse. They are constantly trying to upgrade things in this world but sometimes sticking to what worked and what people liked is the best course of action. They stole away the sleek lines and power availibity in the 3g eclipse's. But I also have a couple of friends who own them but I guess to each it's own.....right.

If its a lifter then don't really worry about it because its a problem that plagues just about all DSM's.
