Default mystery part behind battery?

ok well i had trouble with my starter the other day so i removed the battery to get my hand back there to mess with the wires, and it turned out to be a loose wire....but while i had the battery removed my buddy noticed a circular module that was unplugged and the plug was broken. i have no idea of what it is or does, does anybody know....its a 97 GST
