New member, transmission help
Hello all, my teenaged son has a 98 eclipse fwd 2.0 L w/1997cc L4 dohc engine. It has (had) the overdrive auto transmission. Last week he was driving to school one morning and the tranny had an internal failure, the cross shaft came out of the carrier and damaged the case, so we need to have a new transmission installed. I'm wondering if we wouldn't be better off getting a manual transmission to replace the automatic? We're also hopeful that someone in the forums can direct us in finding a tranny for this car and what we need to know about removal and installation? Any help is most appreciated.

Putting a manual in an automatic you can do but its more work(obviously) There is a guide for doing it somewhere and i will see if i can find that for you so you can see whats all involved. As for finding a new tranny I wouldn't know...check your local salvage yards? Maybe the others can help you with that one.

just replace it with the auto. A junk yard is gonna be the cheapest fix. Try here www.car-part.com

I dont think changing anything to amanual transis that hard if you find a donor car to get evrything from. Evrything bolts right up in the more modern cars.
Ive changed a couple older cars that never came from the factory with a namual from auto to 4 speed
Its not that bad it just takes time. Theres really no fabricating involved in an eclipse.

ya my eclipse had a manual converson done and it worked out great i dont know how they did it but i definately would do it as long as you get it done right and you have a donor car thats the same year make and model so everything lines up itll definately be an improvement just make sure he keeps oil in it and doesnt redline it all the time i know this from experence and i have to replace my main bearings because i forgot to check my oil regularly and redlining it all the time will kill your bearings too

RE: New member, transmission help
if you have all of the parts available to you its not all that bad but if you don't have a donor car or a shell it is most definatly a pain... new trani, clutch, flywheel, shifter linkage, shifter, ECU
