Default Opinion Needed

I have a 98 GSX and im starting to get a knocking sound from my engine...im trying to decide if i want to just do a rebuild of the same engine(stock 7 bolt), swap it out for a 6 bolt engine, or just get a 6 bolt block and get forged pistons/rods etc...

well if you can keep the motor running, buy a 6 bolt and just build it up.

If you plan to be over 400hp some time, then geta forged motor. If not, then rebuild it.

Are you sure its a knocking and not a ticking?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but If you're gonna build the motor with forged internals then the 7 bolt block should be OK. I've heard the the infamous "crank walk" was due to a mismatch between the crank and bearings. I've been researching the same thing, and more and more techs are telling me that forged internals would offer much more insurance against CW than swapping a 6B. Especially looking to put 400+ hp to the wheels.

I'm sure some of the more experienced DSM'ers hear would be able to shed even more light on the subject.

400-450hp? Sounds like a 50trim and a forged motor : )

Forged internals have nothing to do with crankwalk. Crankwalk has to do with the main bearings.

If you ask me, I say a brand new7 bolt will be just fine anyways.

Its up to you. Sometimes doing the 6 bolt swap can be a pain in the ***.

Forged 7 bolt ftw!!!!
