Default Overheating * turbo *

Recently I purchsed a 98 eclipse gs model with a custom turbo kit installed.

However...

Check engine light came on bout a week and a half ago {thinking it may be oxygen sensor}

Also......engine temperature gage is running near the H point {hot}

Owner before said that turbos do tend to run hotter...however this is almost overheating hot according to the gage.

My brother has a few ideas...I.e...putting in 2nd fan...

Are there ANY suggestions..it would be GREATLY appreciated.

tHANK YOU.

First off aftermarket turbo... Has the thermostat been changed to run cooler? Perhaps the thermostat is clogged and needs replaced? Recommend taking it out completely during the summer months and seeing if that helps at all. Installing a 2nd or perhaps a high flow fan will help. you need to either A.) Find a friend that has access to a scanner OR take it to a shop to have the code pulled to tell you EXACTLY what is wrong. Also you may want to look at the intercooler. You may need a better one or maybe there isn't one installed yet.

Well, it has an inter-cooler and it's doubtful that it needs a better one because the turbo is the stock gst turbo. The thermostat to the best of my knowledge is stock, anyone know what temp thermostat i should run, and where I can get it? Also I am new to turbos.......could I turn down the boost to let my engine run a lil cooler and if so how do it do it? I'm running 11psi right now.

Stock parts and running hotter?? Check the feul injectors and pump. You need a higher flow rate for a turbo engine or you'll have more air and not enough gas so the fire will be MUCH warmer then it should be. You also may want to look into if they changed teh computer when they had the turbo installed.

Yep get the computer read to find out what kind of code it's throwing. That will give you some direction on the repairs. And replace teh thermostat. It's a quick and cheap thing to do and can't hurt.

I'm with Sanguinius on the direction you need to go. The Oxy Sensor may be telling you you're burning lean. I would not think a cooler therm. would help, if the stock one can't keep up a cooler one will not either if the problem is lean burn. If the turbo was installed and all the systems were not properly modified to suit, cooling, fuel injection, computer re-program, lurication etc. you will not have it operate properly. I would be suspect of an aftermarket installed unit by an owner who may have cut corners to install. I would find a shop with a dyno if possible and do an exhaust gas analysis to see if you are running lean. If no dyno then you still need an exhaust gas analyser. Get the code as has been previously suggested. I would also try to get the install instructions of the kit and backtrack the entire installation to see if the previous owner did it properly. Maybe that's why he sold it?

Actually I would guess that the previous owner from the sound of it tried to install a stock turbo without all the items required and probably not knowing what he was doing exactly. I'd look into all the previously mentioned systems and the cams should be checked too. The turbo and non turbo ersions both had different cams. But it's a smaller effect if any at all and the main focus should be the feul system, computer, and cooling system.

If you go to www.slowboyracing.com they only reccomend 8 PSI on stock internals for an N/A engine. Your compression ratio is too high for much more boost than that.

From the research I've done if it has the turbo internals then it can handle around 14-16 lbs of boost but NT internals probably handle a wee bit less. And the supporting systems don't function too well to handle that either.
