I was thinking about painting the calipers on my GSX red, has anyone ever done that? What is a good brand of paint to use? Does it actually look good a year down the road?

 

Common thing to do really. Autozone has Dupli-color brake caliper paint kits. They come with a paint brush, brake cleaner, and of course a can of paint. I like those better than the spray cans because keeps the paint isloated and without the spray wash.

 

hmmm sweet! do you just paint them in place then?

 

Yup...well, you'll have to remove the bolts so that the caliper can be painted on the viewable areas of it. You don't have to remove the brake line though. The prepping is the part that takes the longest and that won't affect your time that bad as long as the calipers aren't horribly dirty or already painted.

I painted them today and it turned out good, what is a good way of cleaning them, how long will the paint last?

 

You NEED to keep them clean, otherwise the brake dust and whatnot will eat the paint away and it will look like ****. Maybe degreaser?

 

i would do a clear coat over them so that it will last longer.

 

Just did this on our 97 RS when we rebuilt the suspenson. We used the G2 kit from G2 USA, inc. www.g2usa.com. This is a two part epoxy system. Comes with cleaning fluid (just good old brake cleaning fluid) and a pint of paint and activator. A brush and a stir stick. We did the calipers and the rear drums (its an RS rember). Really easy to use. Even though you brush it on, it drys smooth and has a very glossy finish. Comes in a large variety of colors. Company has a 100% product guarantee and says " If any time during the life of your car the paint should flake or chip off, simply provide proof of failure to G2 and we will replace the kit at no cost"

This is more costly than the Duplicolor kit, it ran about $36 with shipping. It had way more paint than was needed for the calipers and the brake drums. Probably could have done the back plates also.

No financial or other commercial interest, just found this a good product.

 

Cleaning it with a solvent worked for me. WD-40 will do the trick : )
