Puzzled pieces that won't fit (starter/flywheel)
So, here goes...take it easy guys and dolls...i'm a newbee. Anyhoo, in the process of replacing a clutch on my 1999 eclipse spyder, 2.4L, I have had to pull manual transmission at least (4) times. Why? because instead of replacing pressure plate, throw-bearing, fork, and slave cylinder while replacing clutch, I instead learned the hard way (part-by-part). Good news is the clutch feels great, bad news is when I got everything back together again, the starter failed to engage the flywheel. Turning the key, all I got was the "whir" and familiar "click" of the starter. Thinking it was potentially a bad starter, I took it to have it rebuilt. Still no go! So after many curse words, and other embarrassing gestures, I removed the two small screws from the bell housing cover, and upon shinning some light up into bell housing, I found that the starter pinion is doing its job "sliding out and spinning" but not engaging the ring gear/flywheel. Please help! Do I need to install a larger pinion gear; is it possible to install ring gear/flywheel backwards; are there different sized ring gear/flywheels; or what? Everything is brand new now.
