My GS was doing the same. Was getting 17 MPG and spitting black stuff on the ground and bumper. Replaced the O2 sensor at the header and 27-28 MPG and no spitting.

Senses O2, oxygen.......[&:]



Tells the computer how much oxygen/fuel is in the exhaust and adjusts the injectors to get a designated reading.
