Default Thinking about buying a 2000 or 2001 eclipse...

I currently have a 1999 grand prix gt. Its time for a new car and i'm thinking about getting an eclipse. The guys on the grand prix forum don't think that its a good idea, but thats because they are pontiac guys. So heres what i'm wondering... how reliable and well made are these cars as the closest dealership is 75 miles away now and next year when i go to college 500+ miles. I really like the looks of them, a good friend of mine had one and was in a head-on last week and the car is totalled. also, how moddable are these cars? I mean speed wise. also comming from another eclipse owner, would you buy another one? I'm thinking of getting, correct me if i'm wrong, but a 5 speed, gt trim level, 3.0. What are some of the specs on these? Thanks alot!

Well if you're going to college next year don't buy a car that expensive, find something you can settle with for a few grand and something that's in good shape and you can drive for a couple years. Once you get into school and know you have time to get a job then get a nice car. Also if you're interested in performance get a second gen turbo, GST or GSX over the newer ones. You may have the money to do it now, or at least think you do, but unless you've got lots to burn take it from someone who's done it and wait a while.

i'd be selling my grand prix because it doesn't do good in snow. Where i'm going to school they get 6-20 inches of snow every night from what i hear.

Then you should find a cheap 2G or nice 1G AWD car. They are not made in 2000+ cars. They are EXTREMELY modable and if left alone are still fun. Little things can get an ALMOST stock 1G car deep in the 12's if you work at it and still be reliable if well maintained.

Yea, a first gen awd would be your best bet if you have to deal with lots of snow. Where are you going to school?

You'll def have some snow up there then. Good luck with that, if you want a performance car that can deal with snow a GSX is a good choice.
