Default Turbo 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS

97 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS
I have been told that the turbo on this vehicle is seized up.
Is it possible to run without a turbo? If so what would have to be doneto make this possible? Thanks

What the hell? Is it an aftermarket, or do you mean GST?

yea what the hell are you running. more info needed. And you need to find out what the guy means by seized up. that makes no sense. Are the seals gone? Does it have serious shaft play?

I would GUESS, that he was referring to shaft play or a froze up turbine due to sucking in a rock or something... But thats a 420a... it SHOULDNT have a turbo... and if it does (A/M) then theheads are bound to go eventually anyway.

I recently purchased this for my daughter. was told that the turbo wasn't hooked up but other than a power loss it was okay to run.
Several weeks later the engine toatly lost all power and sounded like a cement mixer.
A crankshat kit and 2 rods were sized.
Mechanic told me same vehicle could be run w/o turbo hooked up/
It was okay for a few days around town but after driving it steady for about 3 hours it started losing power and had smoke coming out of the exhausr.
a different mechanic in tht town checked the compression and told me that
the cylinders wre good. It showed the oil level to be very low.
He felt this was caused by the turbo sucking the oil from the crankcase but had no solution.
my question I guess is how or can this car be run w/o a turbo without causing future problems. have not run it since or than to listen /no abnormal sounds coming from engine.

how much did you pay for it and was it a private buy...the guy might have put that stuff on there just to make the car look more apealing and then screwed you over on the deal...

While it can run sans the Turbo... it would still be helpful to know which motor is in there... is it a turbo'd 420a? or a GST with a 4g63t?

we still need to know if it's a GS-T or a turbo'd GS or RS. you can simply answer this questoin by telling us which way the Throttle body faces in the engine bay.... to the left or to the right. It sounds like somebody knew the car was about to take a crap and sold it quickly to get rid of it....

i agree with RC that car must have just had enough life left to be sold and then died...if its a 97 you can also tell by the exhaust pipes if there are two then its a gst or gsx if there is only one then its an rs orgs and its been turbo'd

the only reason i ask how many pipes is b/c on most turbo'd cars (aftermarket or exhaust) the first thing ppl do is aftermarket exhaust.
