Default Turbo Cooking

Hey im new to turbo charged engines and i heard if you dont have a turbo timer you can fry your turbos if your not careful! I dont have a turbo timer yet.... and i was wondering how long do i need to sit and let the car idle before i shut it off? I understand that the harder you drive it the longer youll have to sit but how long if you drive normal? Heres another question...what is the best rpms to shift at in my 97 eclipse gst if im street racing? sorry if i sound stupid my last car was an auto. any input would be great. thanks!

5 minutes!?!?!?!??!?!??!!? wow you must drain half a tank of gas each time you park. My alarm has a built in turbo timer feature and its set for 90 seconds. Ill keep it on for that long after moderately long trip or moderate acceleration. If im racing I may leave it on for 2 minutes or so. If it was just a quick slow drive to the stoor i may even shut it off after 30 seconds. This is all on a 16g turbo with over 40k miles and running 20psi. I have never had any problems and have zero shaft play in my turbo.

For shifting, if you have the stock turbo id shift around 6k rpms. that turbo is tiny and has great midrange power but runs out of steam quickly. I got better quarter mile times when i shifted at 6k. On my 16g turbo i shift at 6600, and on anything bigger or if you have cams you could benefit by shifting higher.

get the hks and set it on auto...it automatically adjust the time based on the past few min. of rpm range. there are a few other good ones...from what i have seen the greddy isn't that friendly to install.. i have my hks for sale if u are interested. just let me know. it's a type 0 and it will come with the 1g harness.
