Talking Turbo issues

hey guys -- new to the entire world of force induction -- just picked up a 95 GSX with 44K on it and the turbo whines for about 3 or 4 shifts till shes warm and then goes away -- did an oil change to what specs recomend ( 5W 30 ) and it still does it -- do i need to rebuild the turbo? what could happen to it if i leave it alone? is there anything i can do to make it stop?

thanks guys -- appreciate the help

Pull the intake hose off and check the turbo for shaft play. Also check the compressor wheel its probabaly making contact with the housing.

like he said. pull the intake off and first see if the shaft on the turbo fins can move side to side....then see if it can move in and out

ok ill do that tomorrow when i get a shot -- if it does have play in it side to side or i can move it in and out then im guessing that means its going eventually....

either way its like 80 bucks for a rebuilt stock turbo on ebay so im not particually worried, just trying to learn a thing or two

You would be more worried about the turbo if the shaft play is IN/OUT rather than side to side. But yes if it has a decent ammount then it needs to be replaced. And i wouldnt buy one from ebay.

I would try these guys

or look around for someone that can do a rebuild for you.

ok took off the intake today and got my hands on the turbines -- seems tight side to side and in and out -- no play whatsoever

i did forget to mention that the down pipe has a leak in it -- you can hear it pretty well so we are replacing it here shortly

would the lack of back pressure possibly be causing the whining on the turbo while it warms up?

and thanks for the website - lot of info there
