Default turbo or nonturbo

hey, i am planning on buying a 96 eclipse gst converted to a gs. when the far had 40k miles on it, the guys oil pan leaked n his engine seized, n it also broke the turbo. after that he rebuilt the engine and didnt put the turbo in b/c he didnt drive it after that. when i showed one of my friends from the outside n he felt thhe straight headers, he said that the car was never a turbo. so my question is, what is the easiest way to tell if a car was ever a turbo or not, keep in mind that the guy said he removed the turbo, thank you
