Default HELP Upgrading Camshafts 2.0 (420A)

I'm rebuilding the 2.0 (420A) engine out of my 99 eclipse, and wondering about cam-changes. I'm not building a race car but have considered a Crower Stage-1 or Stage-2. I have 2 questions that hopefully some of you can help me with ASAP.
1) Can the factory ECU accept a small cam upgrade?
2) Is the $250 spring kit they say is required, REALLY required on a street motor? I build V-8s and new to 4-cylinder stuff.. I have never seen such a small amount of added lift cause coil-bind. I'm not gonna be turning 7000 RPMS so the closing rate and spring pressure shouldn't be an issue. I know in a perfect world, we would all be able to afford to throw $700+ into a whole new valvetrain setup. I wanted to see if anyone has upgraded their cams with the stock setup.
