What year of engines will fit into a '96?

My Eclipse engine messed up some rods or something, I don't really understand it. My sister and my brother-in-law are mechanics I have them fixing it for me, but we can't get a clear answer.

Instead of rebuilding the old one, we are trying to put a new engine in. We are under the impression that another year would fit but nothing has been clear enough to say "nay, or yay". I figure owners would know best and maybe have some advice.
It's a 1996 Eclipse, RS non Turbo.

Any 420a should fit in there... They were used in Eclipses from 95-99
