I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS. 4 speed auto transmission. A lot of the time, when upshifting from 2nd to3rd gear, the car will lag going intogear or the rpms will spike. The spike varies from 100 - 500. Occasionally, it will also kick (sometimes soft and sometimes harder)when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd. The other gears upshift fine and when downshifting, there is no lag, jerk or anything else from fourth to third or third to second or any other gear. Also, there is no slippage while in any gear. The transmission fluid is pink and doesn't smell burnt. What may the problem be here?

Note: Also, this car has less then 23k miles on it.

 

Im gonna go out on a limb here and guess its got the 'sportronic' shifter?

 

If it was stuck in limp mode the car would have only third gear. I would say you have a torn piston seal, since it'll rev up like what your saying. Does it ever neutral out?

 

I also own a 2003 eclipse with the 4-spd auto (it's the GS, w/ the 2.4L 4cyl) with 93k

I'm glad somebody else out there is experiencing what they feel is a very rough upshift going from 2 to 3. Now, however, mine's starting to exhibit this 100-500 RPM mid-shift spike you're mentioning... along with a few other seemingly transmission-related issues...

My advice would be to drive it very lightly... and avoid shiftronic.... I think I'm going to be in the hole very soon for a lot of transmission repairs... [:@]

- A torn piston seal? How much would that cost to repair?

 

I have an 04 ecplise GTS with the autotransmission and its at 70K. My car is doing the same exact thing. It has only happened 3 times to me. I'm thinking about gettting the transmission fluid flushed. Wouldn't this issue be covered under the powertrain warranty? I'm hoping this doesn't lead to tranmission problems I love this car.
