Took it to Autozone but they didn't have the correct harness to plug into the car, so I took it to Advanced Auto and encountered the same situation. So I took it to the local garage, they CAN do it but will charge me $20. Why can't I get it done for free when everyone else can?
your autozone sucks.
agreed, i don't see how they wouldn't have the right one if you have a 3g.

There is another Auto Zone about 20 minutes from here I can call and check before I go there!

Yea they should've been able to do it. Not sure which OBD is on those 3Gs. MOST of the time the check engine light signifies an electrical problem like a sensor. Call around before you make the trip and tell them you need to get a code scan done for your check engine light. If you do happen to get it done ASK WHAT TEH CODE IS! Many times they will say, "Oh its your oxygen sen..s..o..r...(voice gets so quite you can't hear them)." Hahahah! Yea you want to know EXACTLY WHAT THE SCANNER SAYS! Most of them will have words scroll on the screen and if theirs isn't that advanced get ther code that comes up. Good luck!

it uses OBD2 just like most other modern cars. i think that the autozone guys were just too lazy to go do it. an autoparts store not having an OBD2 scanner.....thats not very likely.

Example, your O2 is out of voltage specs and can not tell the ECU how much O2 is passing thru your exhaust. So the ECU takes the safe approach and richens the mixture goint into the Cylinder to make sure the engine doesn't get a lean condition (BAD). More fuel is use so you lose preformance in the car though, you might not tell if you are only driving around town. Your gas milage would go down though. 01's can be checked at Autozone though and I would start with them. At least it would give you a starting point to troubleshoot. GL with it
Not only will your gas mileage go down but also there isn't enough air in the cylinder to burn ALL the excess fuel cleanly so it starts forming deposites on the plugs. Not only are these carbon deposites gumming up your plugs BUT they are ALSO going into your caty and muffler eventually clogging them as well.

I agree the 3G has the OBD II I can't remember what year they started coming on all the cars I think it was mid-late 90's. They're just a bunch of lazy fools.

As for what the codes mean I can't recall offhand BUT there is either a thread or a post somewhere with the code listings (SOMEONE found them...) I'll look in my Haynes when I get home. (I'm kinda at college right now so I can't exactly check at the moment).

P0172 = system to lean (bank 1)

P0175 = system to rich (bank 2)

I am going to guess that you just need to replace an o2 sensor, not a big deal.

Alrighty, that's what I thought as well. On my old dodge i could dance the key and that's the only problem I had with a Check Engine light (O2 Sensor). Thanx for your help
