I was thinking about putting an OEM carbon fiber hood on my '03 eclipse, I want to know some people's experience with a carbon fiber hood, good or bad, and how hard is it to install?

 

Ive installed a CF hood before and its very very easy as long as the hood fits correctly. Its easier then a regular hood cause you can move it around with one hand its so light. Im not sure how good the OEM hood is for your vehicle make sure you stay away from cheaper hoods though because they can start to look horrible fast from weather(lossing their shine) or have cracks. Also if you get a cheap hood it might not be reinforced which you will want to check on. If it is just a complete flat cf mold in the shape of the hood dont buy it. Make sure that underneath the hood has the reinforced bars that go a long it.

 

The OEM that i am talking about it like exact shape and curvature of the stock hood, except in carbon fiber form, the one that i am looking at is a ViS OEM CF hood with a uv coating, rolled edges, and one piece undersiding, it costs about $400, whats a good price range for a decent hood?

 

How much of a weight reduction would a CF hood be?

$400 sounds about like what Im seeing for them. Like he said thought make sure you get a name brand. Or if you plan on painting it you may save a few $ by finding a cosmetically flawed one. Maybe the fooked the gelcoat up somehow or something and it doesn't affect structural integrity but it's visibly notable. They'll sell it cheaper to make SOMETHING off the time and material costs and then you paint to match and noone knows you have the slight weight advantage against someone else in a race . But if you're going for looks full price you'll want.

 

would these look good on my black 93 gsx?????

does it matter if they dont have the bump on the hood to go over the cams?

 

if you get the VIS hood, you will need to make modifications to the slot where the latch hooks to.

 

93 eclipse - it's your preference, i have an OEM CF hood on my 99 eclipse and i love it, i get ragged on all the time for not getting the Ram induction, which does look good but i just like the OEM Look. it's all in preference. I personally like the first hood you have pictured there, but my fav aftermarket hood on the 1g eclipses is the RAM scoop facing the front.

 

would they be easy mod's or should i just go with an oem one because i would like to have one. my car is black so it wouldnt look like a CF hood from far away until you got close.
