Default LA Eclipse owner with a couple questions

First off, I would like to say hi. [sm=yeahsmile.gif](hat face makes me smile)
Names Josh and i'm 20 & live in Louisiana.

Just bought a 2000 Eclipse.
2.0ltr 5spd 48,000miles
perfect interior and clean exterior, motor runs lovely.

I'm a Ford technician, so I felt like I was taking a gamble on this car.

My questions are the usual.
Whats common concerns/issues/problems with these car?
I heard the timing belts and the pulley bearings were garbage.
But other than that, i've heard (and felt after driving) alot of good things.

Just help me out please.
Appreciate it. PLan on posting here alot more.

Im afraid that is not a 2000. Most likely a 1999.

The GS/RS non turbo models are prone to head gasket failure due to mitsubishi only clamping them 50lb when they should have been clamped at least 80.

The GST/GSX turbo models are prone to problems.... usually because parents buy their kids these cars... and they dont know how to take care of it... and basically they end up being horribly abused and that is where most of the problems come from. Other than that they are usually ok. Who ever told you that the timing belts etc were garbage is a moron. That is untrue.

timing belt changed every 60k miles and youll have no problems with it. Also sebba is right, thats nota 2000. But we really need to know the model of the car...GS, RS, GST, GSX?

My bad, its a 99, info on the sticker was wrong.
Production date of 05/1999
doof.
And its an RS.
I had a brief battery problem with it, but after changing the rusted *** terminals, its fine.
As far as kids tearing em' up, I see it all over town.
Its not going to be driven much, its more of a toy. My daily driver is a 2005 F-150.

that last comment scares me... waht exactly do you mean by "your toy?" if you plan on making this car fast. throw that idea out the window unles you have about 4-6k laying around to build a motor and invest in a turbo setup. TRUST me, its a LOT easier to just sell it and get a GS-T or GSX.

ya, unfortenately you got the low end model.. The RS's and GS's are hard to make fast unless you have money like RC said.. Really the best thing about the rs and gs are making them look good. But its not the most popular/well liked thing in the dsm world to have a car thats all show and no go, like anything really.. If your looking for speed, try to get your hands on a GST or GSX. The GSX would be a better car for taking it to the strips racing, but if your just looking for a fun fast car, the GST is a good choice. A little cheaper, and less things to fix..

Advocate, thanks for all that info.
RC, I mean toy in the sense that its just a car to play with and have for fun. Not aiming to make it super fast, personally I think its pretty damn peppy to begin with, but could be faster. I suppose I would'nt mind making it look good.
My truck is my main vehicle, and when I leave work, life at home is pretty boring, so I now have this to occupy me.
A man can only look at so much **** lol

ok gotcha, well if you are just looking for a little "umph" to put into it... you can start with the basics... AEM or Injen Cold Air Intake. and an exhaust, don't go any bigger that 2.5inches on the exhaust. greddy and apexi make good exhausts that are more quiet than others. TR&D makes a screamer (what i have on mine) and so does OBX.

yea, i think with this car I would play a little with the engine, but most emphasis on the cosmetic.
Eclipse's are pretty. The lines the car has are fantastic, and with a little TLC, the car could be jaw dropping.
I'm not a fan of the "rice rocket" exhausts, but we'll see.
In a sense it compliments the look.
