Default oil leak

quick question, i was parked in my driveway the other day and found an oil stain under where i parked. i jacked up the car, and i found some oil around the transmission side of the oil pan. i tightened the bolts up about 1/4 turn and they were tight after that. how often should the gasket be changed if thats the problem,. if not, what do you think the problem is. thanks

be careful not to ovr tighten them, they only need 20 lbs ot tq. I would be suprised if it were your oil pan, normally thats something that dosent need to be changed. A oil pan gasket is ment to be resued, its the rtv sealent that needs to be replaced. RUn down to pepboys and get some black heavy duity rtv sealent. Take off the pan (which is fun as hell)clean off the oil thats on the pan's gasket, remove the gasket, clean the pans lip, then clean the gasket, remove all debrits, old pieces of rtv sealent, then reapply rtv sealent to the pans lip, set the gasket down on the pan, put rtv over the pan's gasket, then let it sit, while thats sitting wipe down where the gasket meets the block, there shoudl be dirt and debrits there and after sitting for a while little streams of oil that has dripped down (thats why you do this last) after its clean, put the pan on and go to bed.

P.S. I hate peroids and paragraphs.
