I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse with 5 speed manual transmission.

My gear ****er is very loose. I can hold the **** and move it about 6 inches in every direction. I can get the car into first gear and it will move forward, but it will not stay in any other gear.

Can someone give me an idea what the problem could be and how hard it might be to fix? Thanks.

 

sound like a bad clutch. try check it out.

 

make sure your shifter cables are secure and the bushings connecting the shifter to the cables are not worn

 

take the shift boot off and see if you can locate the problem.....loose screws, what they said^, etc...
