Default Throttle Body Mix Adjustment Screw

I had *brilliant* idea to see if I could make my car more fuel efficient by adjusting the mix screw on the throttle body. It was apparently loc-tite'd because it didn't want to turn (at first). After getting it to turn; I quickly realized I messed up and should have left it alone.
I have an 01 GS with a manual transmission that I have recently replaced because it seems like the middle-range RPM's don't come down fast enough to allow for smooth shifting. I believe the reason my previous trans failed is because of mis-adjusted throttle body mix screw/RPMs falloff too slow.
I don't want to completely destroy the salvage trans I just had installed....so....
Is there a *correct* way to adjust this mix screw properly? I've read to adjust it to about 850 RPMs without AC on and about 1100 with AC.I have an ODB2 diagnostic tool that will show real time RPMs and such but I just don't know the actual procedure to correct this stupid mistake I made. BTW I usually get about 24 MPG usually in-city driving or stop lights and short freeway sprints.
