Default help with head unit install

i have an 03 Lancer ES with stock stereo system, but am now replacing it.
i just purchased a new head unit from crutchfield (alpine cda-105).
the site said it would fit my car, however, it seems to stick out and i can't get the car's face plate back on.
any suggestions?

i wasn't the one who installed it (a friend did), and i just happened not to be around during the whole thing. he suggested cutting the plastic frame to fit, but that doesn't sound like a first option.

is it possible to move the metal "L" bracket?
if i take the car to a professional installer, how much do you think they would charge to finish the installation (wiring and everything is complete, just can't get the car back together)?

i'll post some pics later, maybe that will help explain the problem.
thanks in advance for your suggestions.
