1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.0 No Turbo - Check Engine Light
I am trying to get my son's check engine light to go off so I can get the car inspected. As soon as you start the car the Check engine light comes on and stays on. He took it to get it inspected and the guy gave him a print out of the codes it had stored in it. The car runs fine but has 144,000 miles on it. My question is what do you think is wrong or the 1st place to look for a problem. I realize that several codes can be issued that have nothing to do with the actual problem. Here are the codes:
P0134 – O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank1, Sensor 1)
P1698 – No CCD messages from TCM (A/T)
P0300 – Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected.
P1899 – Park/Neutral position Switch Failure.
P1487 – High speed radiator fan control relay.
Where do I start hoping somebody else has had this same problem?
Thanks
Chris

Well the misfire and o2 sensor circuit could be attributed to the front o2 sensor being bad. The TCM and switch failure may have a bad sensor, but do you notice any shifting problems or if the lights on the dash showing what gear you are in are working? The fan relay couple just be a bad relay. Seems strange that you are getting 3 things wrong all at once. But its possible that they have just been adding more problems while the light has been one. So i would start by
1. Replace the o2 sensor. Then disconnect battery for an hour or so and try and see if the light comes back. if it does go to autozone or a parts store and they can scan it for you and see if you got rid of any of these.
2. Then try the relay since it will be the next easiest.

No Shift Problem and TCM question.
The car is a manual 5 speed so there is no indicator on the dash. It shifts just fine. We had a new clutch put in it about 4 months ago. Excuse my ignorance but what does TCM stand for? Also do you know where the Front O2 Sensor is located on this car and is it difficult to get to?

The front o2 should be on the downpipe prior to the catalytic converter just after the manifold. It shouldnt be to difficult. And the TCM is Transmission Control Module. But that is only for automatic cars so why you are getting that code is confusing to me. So something is wrong there. Maybe the guy read the codes wrong or something. But i would start with like i said with the 02 sensor and see if that gets rid of your problem. You may need to drive the car a bit to clear the codes once its been replaced so that the ECU rechecks to see that the problem is gone

RE: Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.0 No Turbo - Check Engine Lights
This is very interesting. I just scanned my son's 1996 Eclipse, 2.0 Non-turbo as well, and I have the following codes as you, except for one.
P1698
P1899
P1487
P0302
We just bought it as a fixer upper - and it has around 111k miles on it. It is a 5 speed as well. I sure would like to know if you ultimately found out what your issue was! I'm pretty sure the P1899 and P1487 codes are bogus. Any help would be very appreciated!

Slight hesitation, but seems like it has plenty of power. Unfortunately, with it being out of inspection, I can't drive it much. However, I decided to pull the PCM/ECU out and check it, since it had markings on it like it was a pulled unit. The Part number is: P05293014AC. Information that I am finding seems to indicate this may be the wrong unit for a 1996 5 speed, 2.0?

Check engine code problem resolved!
I discovered what the problem was! The previous owner replaced the ECU/ECM with an automatic ECU, instead of a 5-speed manual model. A quick purchase on Ebay solved the problem, and now all codes have vanished, and have not reoccurred for the past 2 weeks. If you receive codes that don't make sense, I suggest to others to check your model number of the ECU and make sure it is appropriate for your year and engine/drivetrain. I found the same issue last year with a Corolla I bought. THis may be more common than I thought! Cheers!
