Default 99 Galant w/ Automatic wont go into any gear

I have a 99' Galant with an automatic transmission. Last week my wife was driving it on the freeway and i lost all power to the wheels. The engine still seems to run fine, but it just revs in all gears as if it were in nuetral. There is plenty of transmission fluid and it doesn't seem burnt. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate the input.

is it a 2.0 4G63 or a 2.5 V6? Sounds like the torque convertor has failed and sheared. not uncommen on galants. normaly the case if there are no leaks. unfortunatly you will probably have swarf inside the box now. not really one to repair if its not going to be right after, unless you contact an auto transmission specialist which will be expensive. you may need a reconditioned box.

It is a 2.0 and there are no leaks. I have not worked with transmissions before, is there any easy way to verify if the torque converter has failed. Any ideas on what you guys think a reconditioned box will cost? My dilema is that if its not something I can do my self, I don't want to take it down to a mechanic before I have the $$$ to repair it.
