Default Auto Tranny issue

OK guys i know my stuff with manual trannies but autos are not my specialty. We have a 98 accent that when driving and it goes to shift to forth gear it goes right to nuetral. Brought it to the dealer and they say that 4th gear is "gone" whatever they really mean by that. And they want to charge over 2k to rebuild which i know is a rip off. So questions are, is this the real issue, and if so what needs to be done to rebuild it.

might help to tell us what year and model you're driving.

but even without that, it sounds like you have a failed end clutch. there are a million posts about them here, and its repairable without removing the trans.

do a search.

Well, there's not really much to an auto tranny...that's relative of course. I see two parts, the TC, then the gears. The way I see it, if you don't see little sparkly things in the tranny fluid, the gears are most likely good but the TC is bad because it's not allowing the fluid to flow through the turbine blades, thus allowing the car to move, well, it really allows the gears to be "connected" to the flywheel.
Here's a cool site that explains the auto transmission stuff much better than I can.

True, but it is in the "everything else" forum.
Besides a tranny is a tranny. A Mitsu tranny isn't all that different than a Hyundai or any other tranny out there. Just saying.
