Hi there. New to this forum and have just purchased my first Evo. Its an Evo 2. Love it to death and enjoying the experience. Have a problem though which some of you my be able to help me with. On right hand lock and in reverse I have a loud knocking noise coming from the diff. Its not noticeable in the other lock or in forward gears. Any ideas before I might do some serious damage? Thanks.

 

Hard to say what it really is. If anything i would have said like a CV joint or something.

Do you ever launch it hard? Well, im guessing you havnt owned it for long.... so maybe the previous owner did. For now i wouldnt worry about it. If its going to break its going to break. Nothing you can do about that...

 

Thanks for the reply Sebba. It crossed my mind too that it could be the CV on one side of the diff. Have driven it hard(can't resist) but haven't dropped the clutch at 6000rpm..... yet.

 

I wouldnt suggest it either lol... you shouldnt dump the clutch on an AWD car like that... thats asking for problems.

The only way to really tell is by inspecting the car. Maybe just take it some place to get a diagnosis (you wont have to pay anything) then let us know what it is and we can advise you on the best plan of action.

I think the noise is too loud to be a CV. Jacked the car up so 4 wheels off the ground and only makes noises when in reverse. No noises in any forward gears. Lots of play in the rear diff when turning either back wheel or the propshaft. Suspect the problem lies with the rear diff. What do you think?

 

To me that would just sound like your tranny... but you say its coming from the rear

 

take it to the tranny shop before it leaves you stranded hell i aint that stupid.
