Default How to test crankshaft sensor?

95 Eclipse GST - no spark since blowing/replacing timing belts. Replaced belts and head, now no spark to plugs, and won't start.
I'm suspecting the crankshaft sensor - Questions:
1. how common is it that the crankshaft sensor gets damaged when the belts break?
2. How do I test it?
I've got a service manual ordered but hope someone could give me some advice sooner so I can get back on the road.
Thanks in advance
