im new to this forum. my 1994 mighty max has been making a very annoying tick, it comes and goes sometimes it will sound normal (slight valve tap) and then bam! TICK TICK TICK.

i just recently changed the oil 10-40 max life
it has 280000 miles and had a rebuild around 200000
i just replaced the fan clutch.
i heard talk that it could be the water pump going bad? truck runs a tad bit warmer than usual

the tick starts at idle and disappears at 3000 rpm
its VERY unnerving
any ideas?

`It sounds like the auto lash adjusters AKA lifters are bad. If the noise doesnt get any better after warmup, you may not be getting oil pressure up to the lifters. It also could be the heavier weight oil not priming the lifters. If you think it is the waterpump, just remove the belt and start it up. If you have a Mitsu dealer nearby, pick up a factory oil filter and some 5w30 oil and go drive it for a while after you change the oil to see if the noise gets better or goes away.
