My sister bought her 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander new. She has maintained it immaculately. About a year ago, she noticed a noise while driving at and around 35 mph. Any slower, any faster - no noise. We originally thought it was coming from the rear end and maybe a wheel. Hard to describe the noise but I guess it sort of grinds, almost feels like the tire has slid a little. I know this isn't a good description - you have to hear and feel it to completely understand.

She has taken this to about 10 different mechanics, some that are highly rated as being able to diagnosis any problem. They have all made guesses and nothing has worked. I do think when she had the tires rotated the noise stopped for a while but did begin again weeks later.

She had a complete tune up (twice this year), wheel bearings checked, new tires, coil packs replaced, and brakes checked. There may be more but that is all I can think of at the moment. Still has the problem.

I think the fact that it happens at a certain speed is a big clue but I don't have an idea of what it is a clue for. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. She is ready to get rid of this great car because she fears it is going to die on her without notice and she can't risk that.

Help a couple of little old ladies figure this out, please!

 

You do realize that all we have to go on is a 'grinding' type noise at 35mph?

 

Is it 4WD Outlander?
If so, it might be a propeller shaft bearing issue.

 

The grinding noise with the slipping is all it is doing and again, only at speeds of 35-40 MPH. If it were me, I'd not be concerned and just drive at a different speed when possible. However, she is afraid of being stranded or the car just completely stopping and then costing much more to repair.

I don't know if it is a 4WD but I will pass the info on so she can find that out. Would that feel if it is in the rear end of the car?
